What is inside our Museum.
Come to our Museum, at the two ground-floor levels of the new BoG building, to discover a technologically and operationally modern educational centre in economic matters, rich illustrative material, interactive multimedia applications, fan quiz games, a video projection room, specifically designed information screens, tactile exhibits (with information also in Braille code), audio exhibits, and more.
You can see ancient, old, newer and modern-day means of exchange, Greek and foreign banknotes and coins, gold bars, commemorative coins, special tools and machinery for currency production (drachmas and euro), as well as hundreds of other exhibits relevant to currency design and construction (painted drawings, copper plates, proofs, drafts, printing plates, casts, dies, etc.).
You will learn about the Bank of Greece, its responsibilities, role and functions (i.e. how it supports the Greek economy, and how it contributes to the country’s social and cultural development), about the numerous items of historical and artistic value included in its Collections (decorations, medals, paintings, sculptures, engravings, mosaics, antiques, photographs, etc.), about mankind’s historical path from the early means of exchange (shells, animal teeth, etc.), through coins and paper bills, to today’s plastic money and electronic transactions, about the main events that helped shape the Greek monetary system in the last 200 years, about the progressive evolution of Central Banking since the 17th century, about the stages of the long European journey towards monetary union, about the state-of-the-art security features of the euro, as well as about the meticulous process of currency production.
You enjoy a fascinating learning and entertaining experience that combines audio-visual stimuli with interesting knowledge and utilises the most modern museology practices for a better understanding of economic and monetary history.
