Sweden, 1 daler, 1753
Date1753
Mediumcopper
Collection No2009/4246
DescriptionSpecial stamps indicate its denomination, which ranged between 1/2 and 10 dalers. Before adopting the system of conventional copper coins, Sweden, a copper-producing country, introduced this type of coin in order to keep the metal in the country and to maintain its prices at reasonable levels, at a time of strong demand owing to the revival of bronze coinage in the West. Gradually, this heavy, awkward coin was replaced by “credit notes” (Kreditivsedlar).
